Understanding Ayurveda
What is Ayurveda in simple terms?
Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old traditional system of health and wellbeing from India that views health as balance between body, mind, and environment. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, it considers your unique constitution — your dosha — and seeks greater harmony through diet, lifestyle, and body therapies.

The doshas are the three fundamental energies described in Ayurveda as governing functions in the body. Vata (air + ether) is associated with movement and creativity. Pitta (fire + water) is associated with digestion and intellect. Kapha (earth + water) is associated with stability and strength. At VEDA, treatments are selected according to your constitution and current state.

In Ayurveda, strong digestion is called agni — the digestive fire. Signs of healthy agni include regular bowel movements, no bloating after meals, steady energy, and a feeling of lightness. When agni is weak, toxins (ama) are traditionally described as accumulating.

Every session begins with a dosha consultation. Poonam assesses your constitution and current state to recommend therapies that may support greater balance. Vata types may benefit from grounding oil therapies such as Shirodhara; Pitta types are generally supported by cooling, calming treatments; Kapha types by more invigorating therapies such as Udvartana.

What is Shirodhara and what does it feel like?
Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy in which a continuous stream of warm herbal oil flows across the forehead, typically for 30–60 minutes. Guests often describe deep relaxation and a quieting of mental activity. At VEDA, it is one of the treatments selected according to the individual.

Abhyanga is Ayurveda's traditional full-body oil massage. Warm, herb-infused oils are selected according to the individual's needs. At VEDA, Abhyanga is part of a personalized approach and may be combined with other treatments such as Swedana.
Explore our treatmentsWhat is Udvartana and is it good for weight loss?
Udvartana is a dry herbal powder massage traditionally performed with upward strokes. It is invigorating and is traditionally associated with reducing Kapha qualities such as heaviness and sluggishness. It is not presented by VEDA as a stand-alone weight-loss treatment.

Oils are selected according to your constitution and current state. Sesame-based oils are traditionally warming and grounding for Vata, while coconut or sunflower oils are cooling for Pitta. For Kapha, more stimulating oils or herbal powders may be used. Poonam prepares treatments with the individual guest in mind.

Meals at VEDA are prepared according to Ayurvedic principles — warm, freshly cooked, and adapted to the season and the individual's needs. A cornerstone of Ayurvedic retreat cuisine is kitchari, a nourishing rice-and-mung-dal dish that is easy to digest.
